Every once in a while, I would catch a glimpse of Michael Wadleigh, the director, wielding his camera, headphones askew, trying to stay in touch with the other cameramen by radio microphone. It was simply a restive - potentially volatile - presence behind us. I almost never saw the audience, so concentrated was I on the action on stage. But that never happened - not to any of us. If someone had shoved me out of the way, I could have been knocked off that platform. Scorsese explained: All of us were dependent on one another for our wellbeing.
